Bring Family Fitness Outdoors

It’s no secret that fitness and family are both passions of mine! More than anything, I love bringing the two together! I know that summer can be extremely busy, and sometimes it’s easy to put your family first and your fitness on the back burner. But you don’t have to choose one or the other!

Creating Healthy Habits as a Family

Creating healthy habits is so much more than having a six pack or being able to run a marathon. It isn’t measured by the amount of hours you spend in the gym or the number of calories you eat in a day. Having a healthy lifestyle is measured by creating healthy relationships and healthy development for your family as a whole. It is my hope that the habits I have created will be passed down to my girls, and they will create healthy habits that will help them lead a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

Make Fitness Fun

Let’s be honest, there are days that I don’t want to eat healthy or workout- so why would kids feel any different? I know it’s so much easier for me to workout when I am having fun, so I like to make fitness fun for my kids too! Instead of plugging your kids in front of the TV for 30 minutes, or checking them in to the gym child care center while you complete your workout, find an activity that includes the entire family! (P.S.- summer is the PERFECT time to create fit family activities OUTSIDE!)

Outdoor Family Fitness Activities

I’ve created my Top 5 list of fun family fitness activities! Our family LOVES doing all of these, and I hope your family will too!!

1. Walk to the Playground

Playing at the playground is exercise in itself, but if you need to add a few extra minutes of cardio to your daily routine, walk to the playground instead of driving! If you live too far to walk the whole way, find a place to park and walk the rest of the way!

2. Go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt

What is more fun than a family game of “I Spy”?! Taking it outside of course! We love to make a list of things to look for before heading out on a family walk or hike- PLUS, as a bonus to you, I’ve created a FREE download for you to use! Just fill out the form below to get your copy!

3. Visit a Local County or State Park

Our nation has so many great local and state parks, and so many of them are right in our backyards and we don’t even realize it! Pack a picnic and go out to explore for the day. If you are on the search for a park near by, make sure you visit State Park’s website to find your local state parks!

4. Create an Obstacle Course in your Backyard

American Ninja Warrior in your own backyard? Okay, maybe not that extreme :). Grab a few things from around the house and make your own obstacle course! I LOVE Lauren’s ideas over at Heart of Deborah- check it out HERE.

5. Go on a Family Bike Ride

We love getting on two wheels and exploring our neighborhood! This is a great activity for kids of all ages- even if they are too young to ride themselves, grab a bike trailer and get a little extra burn while you pedal with them in the back!
